Is Rahul Mahajan a wife-beater?

Mumbai: Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, is again in the news for wrong reasons after a Mumbai daily reported that his two-and-half month marriage with pilot Shweta Singh is on the rocks after allegations of his relentless physical and verbal abuse, a charge both have strongly denied.

The local daily reported on Monday that Rahul used to regularly beat his wife Shweta whom he had married after his father's death and in the midst of a legal battle over drug abuse.

The paper also said that it was Shweta who had accused Rahul of beating her up and said that she wanted to end the abusive relationship.

The story was accompanied by a photograph which showed that Shweta showing a bruise on her right arm.

As per the report, Rahul had beaten up his wife as recently as last Wednesday and Shweta was left with a cut on the lip, a bruised arm, and a sore back.

However, when CNN-IBN contacted Rahul and Shweta, they both denied the report.

“No, why would I beat her up. She is the only relationship I have in my life. I have never beaten up Shweta and you can call her up and ask her,” Rahul said.

So was he completely denying the reports of him being a wife beater?

“There is nothing like that. Please don’t hype it. I have already gone through a lot of things and I have had more than enough, I don’t want one more controversy,” Rahul said.

Shweta told CNN-IBN, "Every marriage has its lows, but Rahul has never beaten me up. Please leave us alone and do not make matters worse for us,” adding, "There is nothing wrong between us. I don't know who is spreading these rumours.”

When CNN-IBN asked Rahul if any of these reports were true, he said, it would be better if the reporter got in touch with Shweta.

Rahul also said, "This is totally baseless. We are both shocked at this news report. In fact, this is invasion of privacy. The paper has not even bothered to take our reaction before making these allegations."

Asked about the accompanying photograph in media which showed Shweta with bruised hand, Rahul said, "Photographs like this can be doctored using all kinds of software. This is not true. Shweta is in Dehradun and on her return we will discuss the matter and contemplate some action", Rahul said.

Shweta is currently staying in Dehradun with her parents while Rahul is in Mumbai. She too said that all the allegations were untrue.

In fact, she claimed that she had sustained some bruises when I was trying to ride Rahul's bike and fell down. "Please respect our privacy," she told the media.

However, when CNN-IBN spoke to Shweta, she denied the reports saying, "Every marriage has its ups and downs but Rahul has never beaten me up."

She added that she was in Dehradun not because she had run away from Rahul. She said that this was the first time she was visiting her parents after marriage and that she was in fact preparing for Rahul's visit to her parent's house.

However, after CNN-IBN further questioned Shweta whether she was trying to protect him or was scared of him, her reply was a firm.

"If I have the guts to marry him, then I also have the guts to divorce him. There is nothing wrong in our marriage. Please give us some privacy. I don't know who is spreading all this,” she said.

Though the statement was strong, it seemed from her voice that she was a little scared.

When asked if she was scared of repercussions from the Mahajan family, she said that she would not like to comment on the fact and maybe the media should not interfere in her life.

Both Rahul and Shweta said that they had not read the reports in the tabloid, but that they would do so and then plan on whether they wanted to take action against the paper or not.

However, despite their denial, a number of questions remain unanswered and with these fresh allegations, Rahul's political aspirations have hit yet another bottleneck.
