Kolkata: A war is brewing between allies Congress and Trinamool over West Bengal politics. "Congress hasn't taken VRS from Bengal. We are a political party and not an NGO. We don't need advice from anyone," Union Rural Development minister Jairam Ramesh said while defending an anti Trinamool rally in Mamta's constituency.
Congress leader Shukhendu Shekhar Roy said, "Jairam Ramesh doesn't know the political realities of the state. They need to stop doing 'Dalali' for CPM or else they won't just get a VRS but a CRS."
Barely six months after their coalition swept into office in Bengal the war of words between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress has got shriller. Hundreds of congress supporters on Friday took to the streets for the first time against its ally. They were protesting alleged attacks on its party members by TMC party workers.
State Congress Chief Pradip Bhattacharya said, "Why shouldn't we shout and protest if our men are getting attacked. Yes they are in majority but majority doesn't mean they will only look after themselves. What about the others?."
The Congress says there have been more than 60 attacks by the TMC on its people. Angered by Mamata Banerjee's alleged inaction the Congress is now asking its workers to fight back ahead of the panchayat elections.
Strung together by a common foe the CPIM both the Congress and the Trinamool seem to be locked in an uncomfortable alliance in the state where local interests fuel party ambitions. But political brinkmanship aside the Congress will need it ally by its side in the crucial winter session and Trimamool with need Congress for central support and funds.
