Is your child a slow learner?

New Delhi: Does your child struggle to keep up at school, despite putting up in a lot of effort?

Then he/she could be suffering form what can be called an undiagnosed learning disability, which affects millions of children in the country.

However, the good news is that the field of learning disabilities has highly specialised treatments nowadays.

So whom do you go to, if you're concerned about your child?

"Parents needs to ask the class teacher whether their child is showing the same behaviour in class or not? If the teacher notices the problem then they need to figure out if it is happening at home,” says special educator, Geet Oberoi.

The child’s health then needs to be properly assessed by a trained clinical psychologist or special educator.

However, if there are early indicators, or signs that your child may be at risk, at a young age, a proper assessment cannot be done before the age of six.

"When the parent is referred to us, it is usually for a behaviour problem or referred by school for IQ test. We have to go through two kinds of tests, that is cognitive ability and academic achievement and the third is the behaviour. We then go about taking case history,” says clinical psychologist, Roma Kumar.

The process of testing a child takes three to four hours, and is usually split up into two sessions.

Evaluators also do a screening for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and carry out tests for perception, as well as visual and hearing problems.

Says Kumar,” The other areas to go for treatment are special education, occupational therapist and speech and language therapist.”

It can take anywhere between a week and a half to a month to get back results of the evaluation.

If you do get back a positive diagnosis then it is time to look for remedial help for your child because although there is no cure for learning disabilities, experts agree that early intervention is the most effective tool.
