Pak backing those causing J-K unrest: MoS

PaarullParrull, CNN-IBN

New Delhi: After a three-day break from strikes and protests in Srinagar, the Hurriyat Conference and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat will be holding a massive rally to Idgah on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for External Affairs, Anand Sharma told CNN-IBN's Chief Diplomatic Correspondent Paarull that Islamabad is backing elements causing the current unrest in the Valley. Here are excerpts from the conversation.

Paarull: Do you believe that the Hurriyat - if not the united front of the Hurriyat but at least one faction - is getting support from Pakistan?

Anand Sharma: Let's put it this way, there are elments who have received succour and support from across the border. It is a matter of concern. However, I wouldn't like to comment on A faction or B faction.

Paarull: Will your Government talk to the Hurriyat?

Anand Sharma: In the past too, the Government has talked to the Hurriyat. It's not about talking to just to one faction. We are a democracy and all those who claim to speak for the people have the option to come into the electoral mainstream. Get elected and assume responsibility. They cannot claim to represent in a democracy without being elected. Our democracy gives people the option of being elected as members of Parliament.

Paarull: Does your Government believe it is too late to save Kashmir? We have been hearing statements from the Valley and outside to recognise that what is going on in the Valley is a referendum of sorts. Does the Government approve of that assessment?

Anand Sharma: Of course not. We reject it. This claim is outrageous. We are known for tolerance, retraint and a democractic tradition when it comes to India's unity and intergity. It is inviolable. The Prime Minister has always said in the past that we can discuss issues in a democratic spirit.
