Islamic leaders call for tolerance

London: From inside a terrace home in Walthamstow, the middle class suburb in London's east where Asmin Tariq (one of the suspects in the UK terror plot) lives, potential evidence has been gathered in plastic bags and taken away by the police.

VHS, video tapes, DVD's, movies, books and even a vacuum cleaner have all been taken away and marked as evidence.

The present state of Muslims in Britain has made the community tense and angry.

At the neighborhood's main mosque, worshippers overflowed as Islamic leaders called for tolerance and justice for the men who've been arrested.

"We urge all to be mindful of the fact that despite what is being said in the media, all those arrested are innocent until proven guilty," says a spokesperson at the mosque.

But a little more than a year since the bombings of London's underground and bus number 30, many are asking whether once again young British muslims, some from middle class families, are again planning mass murder.

However, Deputy Commissioner Metropolitian Police, Paul Stephenson says, "This is about murderers, people who want to commit mass murder. This is not about anything to do with a particular community."

Friday prayers are no longer the peaceful spiritual journey they were for police are on their guard outside the mosque in Walthamstow and also outside the house of one of the men, who British authorities say was a one of the major players in the plot to blow up planes in mid-air.

But those who would normally worship with the suspected bomber every Friday, insist that police have the wrong man.

"If the British and American Intelligence think these people are capable of bringing down a plane, then we are seriously worried because these people are really not capable of anything like this," says one of the residents of Wathamstow, Ali.

And there is anger in Walthamstow for there is a feeling that the 24 men who have been arrested but not charged, have already been found guilty in the minds of the people.
