Ist case of chikungunya in Delhi

New Delhi: Right after an outbreak in Kerala, Delhi has recorded the year's first case of the mosquito-borne viral disease, chikungunya.

According to Delhi Health Secretary D S Negi, 36-year-old Archana Gupta came to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in the Capital last week with a fever.

Blood sent for tests to the National Institute of Communicable Disease tested positive for the virus.

Gupta lives in Paharganj but so far hospital authorities have reportedly been unable to track her down to inform her.

This is the first reported case of chikungunya in the capital this year.

Last year, around 40 people in the capital had contacted the virus, while a total of 1,695 people from across the country were tested positive for the disease.

Experts do predict that more cases will come to light. There is no vaccine to cure the disease so prevention- that is avoiding mosquito bites is the key.
