New Delhi: A Bangalore-based software engineer, who was wrongly jailed for 50 days by the Pune cyber crime cell last year, has sued the city police.

Lakshmana Kailash K was arrested from his home in Bangalore by eight Pune policemen on the basis of the IT Act on August 31, 2007.

His alleged crime was posting defamatory photos of Chattrapati Shivaji on the social networking site, Orkut. He was arrested on the basis of the Internet Protocol address provided by his Internet service provider, Bharti. As it turned out, the IP address was not his.

Lakshmana had to spend 50 days in Yerwada jail with hardened criminals, had to undergo lathi beatings and was made to use one bowl to both eat in and for using as a toilet.

He was let go on September 21, 2007 after the 'real accused' was arrested.

On Sunday, Lakshmana sent legal notices to Bharti Airtel, Principal Secretary (Home) Maharashtra government and the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Financial & Cyber Crime Unit), Pune Police.

He has demanded Rs 20 crore in damages and has sent a copy of the 10-page legal notice to the National Human Rights Commission as well. In the notice, Lakshmana has given way to his anger at the way in which the police and the judicial system made a mockery of his rights.

He has also written about the degrading conditions to which inmates are subjected to in jail.
