IT giants to get their share of land soon

Kolkata: IT giants Wipro and Infosys will finally get land in West Bengal. CNN IBN's reports that the government is ready to clear the way for the two to set offices on the outskirts of Kolkata.

The Bengal government seems to be learning from its past mistakes. It had left IT giant infosys in the lurch after delaying a 100-acre plot deal near Kolkata for almost two years. However, now with Wipro expressing interest in land space, the government is keen to get rid of the red tape.

"We are very close with these companies and I think within a very short period of time, within a few months we will give them the land," says Debesh Das, IT minister, West Bengal.

It is still undecided where land for the IT majors will be allotted as the land at Rajarhat, the hottest IT destination in the outskirts of Kolkata, is nearly exhausted. According to government officials, Wipro had asked for 50 acres, but was unwilling to pay the high premium of one and half crore rupees an acre. With several it firms also eyeing Rajarhat land, the government plans to allot plots to the two biggies elsewhere.

"It will be in the outskirts of new town," says Debesh Das. He also said that the problem of Wipro and Infosys would be solved at the same time.

Last year, the government allotted land to 54 IT companies, including 46 in Rajarhat. The government claims that 70,000 additional jobs would be created in the next year in the state's IT sector alone, however, whether it would be able to satisfy Wipro and Infosys with plots that are less premier is a question that remains unanswered.
