Ustaad Zakir Hussain won a Grammy this year for the album the global drum project. CNN-IBN caught up with the tabla maestro for an exclusive chat.

CNN-IBN: When you win Grammy it is a great feeling, but your award for the Grammy was for an collaborated effort. How does it feel to win in collaboration?

Zakir Hussain: First of all, it is impossible for anyone to win Grammy without any collaboration. It has happened because there are a whole line of musicians support team that is supporting him and so it happens. Most of them are friends and collaborators since long. I also want to make a special mention of the Indian team who have been very supportive.

One of them my brother, Taufiq Quereshi who have played in the album, Nilaadi Kumar the sitar player and Dilshaad Khan the Sarangi Player, they have all played on this album and that really lends a special Indian flavour to it and so I am glad that kind of sound along with drums has been accepted.

CNN-IBN: A woman fan of yours met you and told you how well you played, she said “Zakhir you seduce me through your fingers “, and what do you think played the seduction line here that has Grammy jury awe struck?

Zakir Hussain: First of all, I have to say that when we talk about Grammy jury, it’s a huge bunch of people. We are all part of Grammy jury, there are few thousand voting members on Grammy, who vote and think they should be given the award.

And here we are, we are trying to combine the two traditions. I think that is what they were seduced by, if that is the word. We took the ancient sound of the organic drums like the tabla, drums etc and we created a special processing technique.

CNN-IBN: Just a little bit about what all is keeping you occupied at the moment?

Zakir Hussain: First of all, I was at the moment busy finishing a CD with the Detroit symphony orchestra. This is the 100 piece symphony orchestra. That apart i am doing a workshop for western musicians in April, where they want me to train them as to how to improvise.
