Chennai: What will you do when someone's met with an accident and needs help?
Well, you could ask a Chennai-based group of young professionals for help. And while you are at it, you could also ask 40-year-old Kala Balasundaram - an IT professional - why he founded the NGO called Amenity Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT)?
Balasundaram's answer to the question is simple enough. "There are so many young people in the industry who need a platform to bring out their humanitarian leanings. I think ALERT is the right thing for us because we are all young professionals who want to give back something to the society," says he.
Balasundaram and a bunch of young IT professionals in Chennai have formed ALERT to educate people on emergency care and the group is luring many more professionals towards it, professionals who are striving for life beyond their work areas.
So the message is clear - ALERT needs commitment. But how do the youngsters who are members cull out enough time amidst their busy schedules?
Says ALERT Secretary, Rajesh Trivedi, "It's not like all of us here do not watch movies or socialise. What we do is that if I like to watch three movies a month, then I will watch just two and spend the last three hours at ALERT."
Among their patrons are corporates and health care professionals too.
Says Lifeline Group Chairman, Dr J S Rajkumar, "The group is like Rang De Basanti actually. The only difference is that they don't believe one has to kidnap a minister and kill him to bring change. They feel that small positive things can bring the required change too."
If you think that social service is all about time and money, these group of youngsters are likely to prove you wrong. Their message is and clear - if you have the will, there is a way.
