IT boosts Hyd employment project

Hyderabad: IT was once an alien word for the villagers of Pamulaparthy village in Medak district. But now they are reaping the benefits of a software designed by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Once a villager registers himself for National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme he's issued a job card and all his details are recorded online.

"At least 10 different departments and 50 odd engineers have discussed, interacted and understood the processes involved in each of the work and developed a software catering to about 60 different works," Program Director, TCS, Col(Retd) SS Rao said.

Using this software a database covering nearly 44 lakh families in over 13,000 villages has been created.

The system ensures error free records and prevents bogus registration and fraudulent wage payments. In fact, all the information regarding the scheme can be viewed on the website, www.nrega.gov.in.

In this system no payment is made through cash and all the workers are directly paid only through their savings accounts in banks or post offices.

This could also give a major boost to rural banking. For instance, in the last six months, in 13 districts where this scheme is being implemented, more than 25 lakh new accounts were opened and the officials say this number would cross more than one crore in the next six months.

TCS claims it was so impressed with this employment scheme that they offered to provide the software for free.

"We identified some lacunae, several challenges which are possible when we are doing the implementation in a manual board. So that was the basic objective of coming out with this solution," Regional Head, TCS, G Ramanathan said.

Impressed by its success, the Central Government has now decided to replicate the same software in 12 other states in their respective official languages.
