Italian shipwreck: Captain says he's not at fault

CNN-IBN

Giglio: More than 48 hours after the hull of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia was torn apart by rocks off the Tuscan coast, its captain, Francesco Schettino says he's not at fault.

"I don't know if it was detected or not but on the nautical chart it was marked just as water at some 100-150 meters from the rocks and we were about 300 meters from the shore, more or less. We shouldn't have had this contact," Schettino said.

But the vessel's owners didn't back him, saying he had made an unapproved, unauthorised deviation in course leading to the tragedy. Schettino was also among the first off his ship and also refused to return to help in the rescue effort. He's been charged with manslaughter.

Two hundred and one Indians have been rescued from aboard the sinking ship Costa Concordia.

"201 Indians rescued, 1 still missing. People have seen him rescuing the passengers. No eye witness to tell us where he is," SM Krishna said.

The missing man is Terence Rebello who was part of the ship's crew; there will be little respite for his family until he is traced.
