New Delhi: Golfers Shiv Kapur and Jeev Milkha Singh happily posed for the shutterbugs – one stood beside his brand new BMW and the other as the latest brand ambassador for a luxury watchmaker.
In these times of global recession, the two present the refreshing face of Indian golf, standing tall and minting money.
“It is not recession but it is a slight downturn. I don't think India has been as badly hit as some of the parts of the world. We are very lucky,” Shiv said.
Surprisingly, corporates across the globe appear busy downsizing, but their ambitions for the Indian golf market is quite interesting.
“We believe golf will eventually become a great sport in this country. So we here for a long time,” Head of Sponsorship for Rolex Jean'Noel Bioul said.
While BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said, “India is far way from recession.”
According to sports marketers, Jeev continues to make Rs 10-12 crore with a whole lot of luxury watch brands and golf apparels behind him. Shiv, though, new in the endorsement business, also makes around Rs 1-2 crore every year from endorsements alone.
So, what do they wish to do with all this money?
“I am going to buy a new car, I am also fond of watches and clothes so I am living my dreams through my endorsements,” Shiv said.
“I just try to look at properties, have a good house, relax and have fun. I just want to live like a normal human being,” said a modest Jeev.
India's golf fans will clearly be hoping their commercial success translates into victories as well.
