Now UPA Govt aims for aam aurat

New Delhi: From Singur to Haryana, the country has been rocked by protests against acquiring agricultural land for industrialisation. So the Central Government has already started working on a rehabilitation programme before moving any further on the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) policy.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that a proposal has been sent to the Planning Commission to create a corpus for the vulnerable sections, especially women.

"These are certainly vulnerable sections and we need to take care of them,” says Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Renuka Chowdhury.

The estimates sent to the Planning Commission propose allocation of Rs 2,000 crore in the 11th Five Year Plan. This money will be used for the women displaced by the SEZ and dam constructions.

Women affected by farmer suicides will also be considered under this scheme.

The corpus is part of the Rs 9,600 crore demanded by the Women and Child Development Ministry to be used over the next five years.

The Government wants to tread with caution and it’s apparent that a comprehensive rehabilitation programme will be worked out before it gives a go-ahead on new SEZ proposals.

Apart from this proposal, the Government is planning to create another corpus of Rs 250 crore for rape victims. So, it's not just aam aadmi, it's also the aam aurat, some would say, that the Government is targeting as a vote bank.
