It's free passage abroad for MPs

New Delhi: It is now official that BJP MP Babubhai Katara travelled to US and Canada thrice earlier, taking different people on the passport of his wife and son.

The passport of Katara's wife Sharda Ben has three entries to the UK and Canada and police say the arrival stamps on the passport are forged.

But how did Babubhai Katara pass so easily through immigrations on his earlier trips?

It is because, unlike others, MPs get special privileges. They get a diplomatic passport, which is red in colour, unlike the usual blue.

To get the special passport, the MP has to write to the passport office, which only checks if the name of the MP is on the Parliament list. And there is no police verification.

A red passport means they are not checked at immigrations like usual passengers.

That's not all. MPs also get what is known as a courtesy, which means no standing in line, no showing passports, no verification.

All of that is done by staff at the airport, while the MP sits in a lounge sipping tea and waiting for the boarding call.
