Bangalore: Lighting courtesy: Mysore Lamps, one of Mysore's oldest companies is finally being snuffed out.
The 71-year-old firm, which had become one of the most popular sights in the city, is being shut down by the government for incurring losses to the tune of Rs 185 crore.
Says state Industries Minister, Katta Subramanya Naidu, "There is no idea of re-starting the company. The only thing is that the dues have to be settled."
It's a company that once employed 1,556 people. More than 90 per cent of those have taken voluntary retirement and the company has been defunct for over 12 years now.
What the city is wondering now is what will happen to the heritage building which housed the company and the 21 acres of land around it.
"The government will develop the land and make office spaces and accommodation there," says Naidu.
Lamps from this state-run public enterprise once illuminated the Taj Mahal. However, with no revival in sight for now, it seems like its going to be permanent lights out for Mysore lamps.
