Saharsa (Bihar): Mahadev Yadav is a quack, and in Bihar's Saharsa town he gets to run a mental asylum at his home.
An asylum where inmates are beaten up, tortured and kept tied as part of treatment.
Patients like Pramod Jha, who keeps singing patriotic songs, are kept handcuffed round the clock.
It may ironic and shocking that in an era of medical science, patients are left to the mercy of a quack, but bashing up mentally challenged patients is a part of the treatment in the asylum.
They are not given any respite even when they are eating or performing their daily chores.
"I was beaten up on the first day but since then I have not been treated badly," says Dinesh Manjhi, a patient.
The man who runs a show in the asylum is not a matriculate but claims to have divine powers. He thinks education is no big deal.
"I have leant from the teachings of saints I have no knowledge of allopathy," quack doctor Mahadev Yadav says.
The treatment methods are also unique.
The moment a new patients lands up, the first thing they do is chain him down. The beating sessions follow soon. After that the patient is taken to a hand pump where he is tied to a tree and hundreds of buckets of water are poured over his head.
It is a difficult to blame both Yadav, who subjects these mentally disturbed men to inhuman treatment and the government which has left no choice for the people but to come to quacks
Yadav says chaining patient is unavoidable and pouring water helps.
"The patient will run away if we unchain their feet. What will I answer his guardians," he says.
