It's raining troubles in Karnataka's Coorg area

Bhagmandala (Karnataka): Come rains and roads to low-lying parts of the Kodagu district of Karnataka get submerged under seven to eight feet of water. The worst affected is Bhagamandala village in the district, from where goes the only road link to Thalacauvery - the origin of River Cauvery.

While tourists and pilgrims are now aware enough not to venture out this season, it's the residents of the area who bear the brunt as the village is under five feet of water.

Says a resident of Bhagmandala, Diwakar, "During the rainy season, it's hard to cross to Bhagamandala town and Thalacauvery. People have to really struggle. Every year, this is a common problem."

Adds another resident, Sampad Kumar, "It's hard to get grains and provisions from across. We don't know what to do."

In the last 24 hours, Thalacauvery has recorded 193 millimetres of rain and Bhagamandala 156 millimetres.

Evacuations have been carried out in various parts of the district and though rains have now abated in the district, locals insist that the monsoon seemed unusually fierce this year, a claim the administration denies.

Says SP of Kodagu, D R K V Thrilok Chandra, "The Met Department says there is no valid data to suggest that anything like that. The district administration is geared up to meeting any eventuality. Rescue teams, 24-hour control rooms and Ganji centers - if evacuation is needed - has been set up. People have been given advisories."

In a village that has been unwillingly partitioned by the rains, its a rope that has become a lifeline of sorts for its residents. And this seems to be the way things will flow, till the rain Gods let up.
