IT's the way for Karnataka potters

Kurubarakunte (Karnataka): Pottery is one of the oldest professions in the world. For Kurubarakunte resident, Nandeesh, it's the one thing that ensures him his two square meals a day.

But the wheels of fortune have slowed down for Nandeesh. “We need water to make the pots but there's acute scarcity of water in Kurubarakunte. So it's difficult for us. We have to walk long distances to get water,” he says.

Now, help is at hand. Thanks to employees of Intel India and an NGO, Children's Love Castle Trust, Kurubarakunte will have 15 rainwater harvesting tanks, which will store water for use by the potters.

The IT professionals were only too happy getting their hands dirty for a cause.

“It's a programme where employees volunteer their time as they are doing today. This is definitely better than being at work today so it is very easy to get them out to give back something to the community. It is very important,” said President of Intel India, Frank B Jones.

And while they were at it, they built three solid waste management units, planted some samplings and even conducted an awareness programme on segregating waste properly.

Needless to say, the potters are delighted. “Rain water fills up the tank and that can be used for washing clothes and making pots. So it's very beneficial for us,” said Nandeesh.

The potters of Kurubarakunte are prepared for the monsoons this year, to collect the precious rain water in the tanks that have been built for them so that their wheels of fortune can turn once again.
