It's truly an honour: Sampras

Pete Sampras has been in the company of Legends where his records stand, some still unbroken but he got the fitting tribute to his illustrious career when he was inducted into the tennis hall of fame.

He picked up the tennis racket at 7, and a Legend was born. Pete Sampras ruled the tennis world through the 90's and is possibly among the best to ever play on Centre Court and so it came as no surprise when he was inducted into the Tennis Hall Of Fame.

"It's truly an honour to be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame. I'd also like to congratulate my fellow inductees as well for taking a timeless place in the history of tennis which is really special," said Sampras.

The US Open in 2002 was the last ATP tournament he played, and despite speculation of having lost his touch, the man went on to beat players who were at the top of their game to win his 14th Grand Slam title, a record yet to be broken.

"I embrace the quiet way and I walked the high road as best as I could. Above all, I wanted to represent myself, my family, and the game in a way in which we could all be proud of.

"So as I take my place among the greatest players of all time here in the Hall of Fame, I stand before you both humble and grateful. I'm a tennis player, nothing more and nothing less. It's more than enough for me, it always has been, I thank you," said the former World No 1.

He may have taken the high road, but the memories of his name on top of the ATP rankings for six straight years will remain in the minds of sports historians and fans alike.
