New Delhi: It was an upbeat Navjot Singh Sidhu getting ready to paint the town red, his red turban a sign of his high spirits.

"Red turban is a flag for the bull,” he said. It was a bull run for the newly-elected MP and one of the biggest stories of this election was the victory for the BJP in Punjab.

They got three seats in the last election and in this election they were up by 18. So not just red but saffron has come to Punjab.

As the results started pouring in, it became clear the his rival Surinder Singh Singla was on a sticky wicket.

Already sort of a folk hero in Amritsar, Sidhu visited one counting station after another with his supporters.

“I have found the wealth I was looking for. The Guru's city and the faith of its people is with me,” he said.

But he chose to be magnanimous in victory. “I forgive those who spoke against me. They have only helped me wash my sins. I hold no grudges,” he said.

While this battle may have left Siddhu with a sweet taste in his mouth, a legal battle remains to be fought.

His appeal against the recent conviction is pending with the Supreme Court and the silver lining could just be the fact that the process could last the length of his term.
