The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church on Thursday conducted election to the Jacobite Syrian Christian Association, the administrative body of the church. Poovanthara Mathai Cor Episcopa of Thrissur dio cese was elected the new priest trustee of the Church. George Mathew Thekkethala was elected the secretary while Thambu George Thukalan, who completed two terms as secretary, was elected laity trustee. Catholicos Baselios Thomas I has been re-elected the metropolitan trustee. A 267- member managing committee has also been elected.
A resolution urging the government to take immediate action to find a solution to the dispute with the Malankara Orthodox Church over the ownership of churches was passed at the meeting. Fr Varghese Kallappara presented the resolution. It was also suggested that steps should be taken to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle among the members of the church.
“It was suggested that waste treatment plants should be set up in all parishes. It was also decided to provide assistance to deserving students for higher studies,” said a senior metropolitan of the Church. A former member of the managing committee had approached Kottayam and Kattappana Sub-courts and Perumbavoor Munsif Court seeking judicial monitoring of election.
