New Delhi: Eight persons were picked up for questioning for their suspected role in the serial blasts that rocked Jaipur killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 150 people.
Police have identified a cycle vendor who sold nine cycles to a man. The security forces are also preparing an initial sketch of the buyer for the identification procedure. According to initial reports, the bombs were planted in cycles, which were bought from one shop.
Authorities on Wednesday clamped curfew in 15 areas as a precautionary measure. Those picked up for interrogation included a man who was injured in the blasts and a rickshaw puller as investigations pointed towards involvement of Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islami (HUJI) in the serial blasts, sources said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for an emergency Cabinet meeting even as politicians across party lines make a beeline for Jaipur to access the situation. BJP’s Gopinath Munde was one of the first ministers to visit the state capital.
According to the Rajasthan Home Ministry, four troops of the Rapid Action Force have been deployed in the city.
One live bomb, which was planted on a bicycle, was found near one of the blast sites. However, the bomb was defused, police said, noting that all the explosions were triggered with the help of timers.
"We have collected sufficient evidence from the place blast sites. These things are being analysed by our technical experts. There was one explosive, which we have defused. Definitely cycles were used, but we do not know anything else," Superintendent of Police, Jaipur, Raghvendra Suhasa told CNN-IBN.
Preliminary examination of the blast site indicated the possibility of ammonium nitrate being used in the explosive devices, which were filled with ball bearings and small iron pipes to act as splinters, sources said.
Meanwhile, 32 people were picked up from the Indore railway station on grounds of suspicion. They have been were detained for questioning.
While 33 bodies were handed over by 0530 hours IST on Wednesday, the rest remained the hospital.
The next 72 hours are crucial for these victims. By then, if no one comes forward to claim the bodies, the hospital authorities will hand them over to the police for state burial.
Curfew was lifted from parts of Jaipur on Wednesday evening as the city remained calm and no untoward incident was reported a day after seven bomb blasts killed at least 63 people here.
Police authorities had imposed curfew from 0900 hrs IST to 1800 hrs in areas under the jurisdiction of the police stations at Lal Kothi, Adarsh Nagar, Transport Nagar, Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Ram Ganj, Galta Gate, Brahmapuri, Bhatta Basti, Kotwali, Nahargarh, Sanjay Circle, Jalu Pura and Sadar.
According to reports, 23 bodies, including two women and a child, have still not been identified in Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Hospital.
