Jaipur Court declares Mahanti absconder

New Delhi: More trouble for suspended Orissa DGP B B Mahanti. The Jaipur Court has declared Mahanti an absconder and has issued a standing warrant against him.

The court has also ordered for his property to be attached. The absconding Orissa cop is accused of helping his jump parole in November 2006.

Twenty-four-year-old Bitti Mahanti was convicted by a fast track court in Jaipur for raping a German research scholar at Alwar.

The court also called a permanent warrant against the top cop who has been on the run since March 2007.

Mahanti, the senior most Orissa cadres IPS officer is in trouble since his only son Biti Mahanti has jumped parole.

Following his action, Mahanti was suspended from service by the Orissa government.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik himself stepped in after the Rajasthan Police served B B Mahanti a non-bailable arrest.

In August 2007, the chief judicial magistrate rejected Mahanti's plea to convert a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued against him into a bailable one.

The non-bailable warrant was issued against Mahanti for obstructing the arrest of his son Biti

Following that, the Rajasthan police handed over the arrest warrants for Mahanti and the absconding Biti to the Cuttack district magistrate.

"I received two copy of NBW from Cuttack collector of B B Mahanti and son Biti Hotra Mahanti for execution, we are taken all steps to execute the warrant. We are also taking steps to execute the warrant. We will immediately verify whether Mr Mahanti is in office or in home. We are going all out execute the warrant,” says Cuttack SP, Soumendra Priyadarshi.
