Jaipur: When French designer Fredrick Cartier walked the corridors of a palace in Udaipur, he felt déjà vu. And since then he's looked at himself as the re-incarnation of an Indian royal. Now he eats, drinks and sleeps the idea of being a Maharaja.

“As a European designer I'm closer to dreams and beauty. When I stayed at this haveli in India surrounded with paintings and pictures of Maharajas on the elephants I began living like this,” says Cartier.

Fredrick starts his day with yoga and meditation then he has a two-hour makeover, complete with a ceremonial sword, royal turban and jewels to transform his look.

Coffee table books are his source of inspiration. And to complete the picture, Cartier is looking for a blue-blooded wife in India.

“She hasn't come into my life yet but she'll come one day. Things happen when they have to we have to wait for them,” says Cartier.

When Cartier walks the streets of Udaipur or rides by on an elephant or camel, people look on. Some are amused while others are flattered by his love of India's heritage.

“He wears a turban with much ease and finds his way around the palaces with ease. He thinks he's an incarnation of a Maharaja,” says a resident of Udaipur, Vikram.

Catier is on the other side of the spectrum living his royal fantasy in the city of Lakes. However, he says that people should see the message behind his actions, and that is to save and value India's rich but crumbling heritage structures.
