Jamia Nagar residents allege 'profiling'

New Delhi: The residents of Jamia Nagar, a predominantly Muslim area, were in shock after the gunbattle between suspected terrorists and Delhi police on Friday.

Most residents are questioning the alleged profiling by the police and some are even suggesting they should have been taken into confidence.

“They should have contacted some citizens of the place and asked them to co-ordinate this. I wont be surprised if this is a fake encounter,” said one resident.

Jamia Nagar turned into a fortress within minutes but that didn't stop people from going to the mosque for their Friday prayers.

Among them was 27-year-old Haroon Chaudhary. Haroon, a fashion designer, says despite such incidents, he feels safe in Jamia Nagar.

“Everyone lives together, we celebrate our festivals like Ramazan and Eid together. In case there is a problem, everyone comes out to help,” he says.

Fifty-four-year-old year old Sarfaraz Ahmed has been running a pharmacy in Batla House for 25 years. He says the biggest problem with Jamia Nagar is the steady inflow of migrants, which makes identification of residents difficult.

“It's a densely populated area. There are lot of people who come here to study at Jamia University. There are people who come from Bihar in search of work,” he says.

Police feel that Jamia Nagar provides a safe haven for terror operatives who can easily hide in this thickly populated colony, making the cluttered ghetto an ideal hideout for anyone trying to escape surveillance.

The residents here may argue they are being unnecessarily stereotyped and targeted, but the fact remains that it is extremely difficult to police this area.
