New Delhi: Holding posters and waving the tricolour, hundreds of students and staff of the Jamia Millia Islamia University took part in a peaceful march on the campus on Thursday morning. Students say they feel re-assured that the university is united to protect them.
They say it was a good idea and now they know that the faculty is with them. Students also say that the march has made them feel more confident about coming to college and that it was a nice feeling to see everyone united.
But even though the peace march lightened the atmosphere, there was no denying the underlying fear in the students who are now tiring of police attention.
English Department Lecturer at JMI, Adil Mehdi says, "Just yesterday, four PhD students were picked up by the police. They were beaten up and left after eight hours of interrogation."
After the Vice-Chancellor promised to provide legal aid to the students arrested for their alleged involvement in the blasts, faculty members came forward to pledge their solidarity for all the people living in Jamia Nagar. The teachers announced the launch of an extensive civil society campaign.
Manisha Seth who teaches at the Centre for the Study of Camparitive Religions and Civilisations says, "We have decided to help all those studenets who are being randomly picked up by the police. We will provide legal and any other help they need."
Almost a week after the police encounter in Jamia Nagar, the university administration, independent teachers groups and Old Boys Associations have come out in strong support of the students. They say it's their campaign against branding of a university and a community.
