New Delhi: The Vice Chancellor (VC) of Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) University has decided to stand by his students who have been picked as suspected terrorists in the recent Delhi bomb blasts case.
The Jamia campus had been wearing a deserted look since the police encounter last Friday, but on Wednesday evening hundreds of students poured in to listen to the Vice Chancellor as he addressed them.
The head of the university promised to provide legal aid to the students who have been picked up as suspected terrorists by the special cell of the Delhi police.
VC, JMI, Mushir Ul Hasan says, “Our constitution allows us to provide a lawyer to those who can't afford to defend themselves. We are going to take care of our wards.”
Hasan's address to the students at JMI has raised political eyebrows.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted the VC's head.
BJP politician Ravi Shankar Prasad said that he (VC) should be sacked.
However, Congress came out in support. Congress Spokes person Shakil Ahmed said that BJP was being unfair.
Caught in the crossfire are the students. Many of them continue to bear the consequences of the police encounter.
A student Rizwan Qaiser says several students have been asked by their landlord to vacate their houses.
This is turning out to be a huge problem as almost 50 per cent of the outstation students live in adjacent colonies.
The university administration has come out in full support of its students promising to provide legal aid to any one of them who might need it. However, the student community continues to be edgy with several outstation students packing their bags and leaving the campus for the time being.
