New Delhi: Jamia Milia Islamia Vice Chancellor (VC) Mushirul Hasan is in the eye of a storm for his plans to use government funds to provide legal aid to terror suspects.
He has been reassuring students that they won't be denied justice. Hasan has been leading peace marches in the Jamia Milia campus, where students are dismayed as two of their university mates have been arrested by the police on serious terror charges.
Hasan insists they cannot be presumed guilty without a fair trial. He says that he is going to defend the students.
Hasan has sought and obtained permission from Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Arjun Singh to extend legal aid to the students.
The VC pleads that the media should show restraint during such times.
Hasan has faced student protests in the past for his liberal views and this is not the first time that he has come out in defence of his students.
In taking his stance, Hasan has incurred the anger of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
However, he says that he is not bothered about it and believes that in a democracy, none can deny the right to a fair trial.
