Jamming for River Yamuna's sake

New Delhi: Free spirited jugalbandi is something Rahul Ram has been doing successfully for the last decade.

His folk-rock band Indian Ocean's mainstream success is an example.

So when it comes to a musical tribute for the River Yamuna on World Environment Day, it's time to jam in the hope that at least one person listening would decide to do his bit for the rivers cleansing.

But can a song actually be that powerful?

Says Rahul Ram, "From my experience with the Chipko Movement 25 years ago and the Narmada Bachao Andolan I have seen that songs can bring people together. For the Narmada Bachao Andolan Ma rewa was like a defining song. You carry that with you even when you’re part of a movement."

Together, with a band of musicians called Jigri from the NGO, Swecha - which is dedicated to restoring the River Yamuna - it seems that Rahul and his jammers have just the right tone for music for a cause.

Here's hoping they can actually be by the Yamuna river bed with the same spirit when required.
