Srinagar: Authorities on Friday dispatched a police team to evacuate residents of avalanche prone area of Waltengu Nad in Kulgam district. Though the area is avalanche prone, local residents are hesitant to shift during the winter, police spokesman said.
"A team of 30 Constables has been dispatched to shift and rescue the 60 civilians of Waltengu Nad," he said. Heavy snowfall has led the authorities to issue an high danger avalanche warning in areas close to hills and mountains across the Valley.
Waltengu bore the brunt of a massive snow avalanches in February 2005 when dozens of persons were killed while hundreds others were rendered homeless.
