Chinore: Four-year-old Kajal's eyes still reflect the trauma of the 18 hours that she was kept hostage by militants. Except for the few words she muttered when she saw her favourite guava tree, she has not spoken anything.
Kajal and three other children were held hostage by militants in Jammu without food or water for over 18 hrs. They spent the time comforting their mother who suffered a bullet injury on her foot.
The eldest, nine-year-old Sheetal speaks about those terrible moments.
"They were wearing army uniforms and they came into our house and threatened to kill us," she recalls.
The children are now staying at a nearby ashram while they recover from the ordeal.
"As the children kept being rescued, the crowd swelled around the house and people were hoping that all hostages would be safe. The youngest girl got scared and is not syaing anything now. I think this can be traumatic for a child," says the swami ji (priest) of the ashram.
The mother of the children is still in the hospital and the children visit her frequently. Ask them what they want to do and they have a quick answer - they want to play, watch TV and spend time with swami ji.
After 18 hours of trauma, the children are looking for a new day and hopefully, the memories will fade soon.
