Jammu: The hostage crisis in Chinore area of Jammu finally ended as army swooped down upon the terrorists in the early hours of Thursday.
The terrorists had held a woman and four children inside their own house after pushing out the male head of the family.
Security forces have gunned down all three of the terrorists. Three of the hostages are dead too.
The three militants disguised as policemen were holed up in a house for 20 hours engaging the army in a fierce gun battle.
6-year-old Rishant woke up to a rattle of gunfire on Wednesday morning. Held hostage inside his own house without food and water, all he can say after the rescue is, “It was raining bullets…”
His sister, Sheetal narrated how they were threatened by the gun-toting terrorists when the family locked itself inside a room.
“Open the door, yelled the terrorist at us, threatening to send a shower of bullets our way if we did not comply,” says the shaken girl.
The mother is in hospital and the father, Billoo Ram who had earlier watched with helplessness as the army struggled to free his family, is now beside his wife.
The children, hungry and shaken after the ordeal sit inside their house, now dreading that terrorists could walk in any moment.
GOC Tiger Division V L Chowdhary said, “The family members were able to take the children to one room and that’s what saved them. The terrorists tried desperately but failed."
Billoo Ram, the father of the rescued children said, “I am thankful to the army for saving my family.”
A neighbour, Sandeep was gunned down by the militants though.
The army had to practice caution and discretion in their attack as the threat to the safety of hostages reigned supreme.
VL Chowdhary said, “Dichotomy was in case we hurry up we may have those people killing these people, and that made us delay the operation."
Police suspect the terrorists could be the same ones who reportedly crossed into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan through the Kanachak sector on Tuesday morning.
They have not ruled out the possibility that other terrorists may be holed up in the same area.
There is a mix of celebration and sorrow in Billoo Ram’s house.
The army meanwhile has succeeded in handling a delicate and intricate operation resulting in the rescue of most of the hostages.
