Jammu kids make art from trash

Jammu: Children in Jammu have come up with a creative solution to the polythene menace. Since non-degradable polythene bags can neither be buried nor burnt, a group of children in the city have found a creative way out to handle the polythene hazards.

They have declared war on the plastic menace and their weapon of choice is art.

However, the war promises to be loads of fun and could also make way into people’s living room if children continue to work with enthusiasm.

To make the masterpiece, each child collects over 100 to 150 polythene bags, wraps it over iron frames, coats it with Plaster of Paris and finally gives it a dash of colour.

"First we wrap the iron frame with newspaper and then with polythene. We then coated it with plaster of Paris and then paint it" a participant, Janam says.

And in the process these children have proved that serious problems often have simple solutions.

"Plastic bags cause diseases and so we must not use them. This is an art form where the plastic bags are being used. If we start from here we can go a long way in reducing polythene menace," another participant, Anubhuti Sharma says.

The initiative is the brainchild of the Jammu and Kashmir Fine Arts Society. What started out as a series of workshops for children has now made its way to schools.

"Even if one students chips in with 100-150 bags, then we can easily get over the plastic menace. We decided to chose children since they show a lot of enthusiasm and would carry forward this drive," artist Suresh Sharma says.
