Jammu: The violence in Jammu over the Amarnath land row shows no signs of abating.
Friday was the ninth consecutive day of the bandh and 33rd day of violence in the district as massive rallies continued in many parts and protestors gutted a police station in Panjtirthi area and 14 houses.
Two people were killed and 13 injured as angry Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti supporters clashed with police while attempting to ransack the district magistrate's office in Samba. Some of the injured are in a critical condition.
“Out of the 25 (injured), four have been referred to Jammu and all others are receiving treatment here," said Madhu Khandav, Chief Medical officer of Samba district hospital.
The protests broke out after talks between the Samiti and Governor N N Vohra failed. Protestors spilled out on the streets of Jammu, defying the curfew and tried to storm the Raj Bhavan.
Hundreds marched to the airport, forcing PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah to remain stranded in the building for almost four hours.
Additional police units had to be called in before the leaders were able to proceed to the Raj Bhavan to attend an all-party meeting.
“We had a four-hour meeting. Everyone said that this flame of violence should be doused.
Talks should be held with all the groups involved in it, either they are here (Jammu) or in Kashmir, their misunderstanding and doubts should be cleared,” said Abdullah.
The Governor has proposed an eight-point formula to end the deadlock. This includes allowing the Amarnath Shrine Board to maintain infrastructure during the Amarnath Yatra period.
But the Sangharsh Samiti is adamant that the decision to revoke land transfer to the board must be revoked. Failing which, it has threatened to cut off essential supplies to Jammu.
