Amarnath row:Protests continue despite curfew

New Delhi: Protesters demanding restoration of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board, on Sunday staged massive rallies in Jammu and fought pitched battles with the police.

As the bandh entered the seventh day on Sunday, fresh cases of violence have been reported in Jammu.

Police lathi-charged protestors in the Gangyal area of the city. Protests have been reported in Gangyal and Muthi despite the curfew there. The Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti has extended its call for bandh by two days.

Meanwhile, BJP president Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley arrived in Jammu on Sunday to visit the injured protestors.

The party has outrightly said that the Amarnath Land transfer was a poll issue and if voted to power in the state, they would divert the land back to the shrine board.

Appeasing the sentiment in Jammu region, the BJP has also said that article 370 should be abolished in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile sporadic protests over the revocation of land transfer order still continue in areas of Jammu including Muthi, Digiana and Samba.
