New Delhi: The No. 1 ranking has changed quite a few hands this year already on the women's circuit and on Sunday, it was taken over by Serbian Jelena Jankovic.
It has been an eventful year for the 23-year-old Serb player, who is now aiming for her first Grand Slam crown.
Jankovic won the Porsche Grand Prix trophy defeating Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the final in Stuttgart on Sunday. The win at Stuttgart was Jankovic second title in two weeks.
She has won more matches than any other player on the tour this year and it was no surprise, she regained top spot on the rankings table on Monday.
In 19 events this year, Jankovic win-loss record is 59-16.
"After winning in China I was continuing to improve and playing better and better each time. So second title in two weeks is great," says Jankovic on the past two weeks.
Interestingly, If Jankovic ends the season at No. 1, she will become the first woman to do so without ever winning a Grand Slam.
It is a blot she would like to erase soon from her career.
"My goal is to win a Grand Slam and that's what I am really focusing on," she says.
While her Grand Slam ambition will have to wait till next year, her consistent show this year has given her a handy lead of 375 points over her nearest rival Serena Williams as the race to the year end Sony Ericsson championships hots up.
