Japan to aid water project

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has financed the IV Phase works of the Cauvery Second Stage drinking water project for Bangalore city, has shown inclination to support BWSSB’s plan to provide water to 110 villages which have been merged with the BBMP some years ago.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Development and BWSSB Minister S Suresh Kumar said that JICA has assured to look into their proposal and has sought information about the source from where the water would be drawn.

“We will constitute an expert committee to provide suggestions to the State Government on the issue. Bangalore may need another 15 tmc of water and there are several proposals before the  Government to procure the water without affecting the agriculture,” the minister said. He said that the BWSSB aims to provide water to 110 villages which were under the erstwhile one Town Municipality and seven City Municipal Councils including Rajarajeshwarinagar, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli and Kengeri.

The minister said that BWSSB is looking at providing 2 lakh new water connections in the newly-added areas with the commissioning of the  Cauvery IV Phase drinking water works. The total capacity of water being pumped through the Cauvery drinking water project to Bangalore would increase from the present 900 MLD to 1400 MLD of water after the commissioning of the project, the minister said.
