Jaipur: A Japanese woman has alleged that she was raped by a hotel manager in Pushkar, the popular tourist destination in Rajasthan, on April 2

The woman sent a fax to the Superintendent of Police, Ajmer on Tuesday alleging that Babloo raped her after giving her a drink laced with an intoxicant. Police have filed an FIR against Babloo and three others on charges of forgery and rape.

The also alleged Babloo had cheated her of Rs 54,000 which she gave to him for safekeeping as he told her that Pushkar was unsafe for foreign tourists. Police officials said they cannot make an arrest till they speak to the woman.

"On the basis of a fax we recieved from the woman, we tried contacting the woman. We requested the Japanese embassy to send her to Ajmer. We have to take the statement of the victim before making arrests," Senior Superintendent of Police Srinivas Janga said.

A police team has been dispatched to Agra, where the Japanese tourist is currently staying, to record the victim's statement.

Rajasthan Tourism Minister Usha Punia said tourists have to be a little more careful and vigilant. "We are also trying to talk to the locals as security of tourists is as much their responsibility as the authority's," Usha said.

Rajasthan, a popular draw for foreign tourists and backpackers, is fast gaining notoriety with a spurt in rape cases.

This is the third case of a tourist rape in the state within a year.

In 2005, a 47-year-old German tourist was abducted and raped by two auto-rickshaw drivers in Jodhpur. The duo were sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court within a month.

On March 20 this year, a 26-year-old German research student was raped in an Alwar hotel by the son of a senior police officer. The victim was a colleague of the accused, who has been found guilty and sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a fast-track court.
