Jaswant sacking: diversion from BJP problems?

New Delhi: Was Jaswant Singh a victim of a deliberate strategy to dismiss any serious introspection on what went wrong for the BJP in elections 2009?

Twenty-four hours after sacking Jaswant Singh on the first day of the Chintan Baithak a report prepared by veteran leader Bal Aapte enquiring into reasons for the party's loss is now out. And it is laying the blame squarely on those who strategised and led the BJP during the election campaign.

The report is critical of Advani for being too harsh on Manmohan Singh and referring to him as weak. It also says that Advani's projection as PM candidate didn’t go down well with the youth.

Varun Gandhi's hate speech is also described as a prominent factor for the party's loss. Narendra Modi's projection as future PM had an adverse impact and it describes the entire poll campaign as one that was devoid of any focus.

Arun Jaitly, Sudheendra Kulkarni and LK Advani were responsible for BJP's campaign management. Sudheendra Kulkarni immediately went back to being a journalist after the debacle and Arun Jaitly teamed up with Advani to rescue himself from any accountability assessment.

It is this reluctance to accept any responsibility that had converted Jaswant Singh into a rebel initially. Now, he is back to targetting Advani.

“I had said the same things as in my book during LK Advani's book release as well. Why was everyone silent then? asked Jaswant Singh.

However, Arun Jaitly said, “Advaniji had just quoted from a speech in Pakistan's constituent assembly to tell them what they were and what they have become as a society."

By now training his guns on LK Advani and his supporters, Jaswant Singh has ensured that his sacking saga won’t get over anytime soon. But here’s the rider: is there anyone now seriously looking at all the findings of Bal Aapte?

If Jaswant Singh is paying the price for breaching ideology, will questions be asked against Advani for totally mismanaging the election campaign?
