New Delhi: Jaya Bachchan has been disqualified as the Member of Parliament on the ground that she was holding an office of profit.

Jaya's disqualification as member of Rajya Sabha - to which she was elected on a Samajwadi Party ticketin 2004 - was done by President A P J Abdul Kalam on the recommendation of the Election Commission.

The EC had earlier disqualified her from the Upper House of Parliament for holding a position of profit as the chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council.

The matter had gone before President Kalam for his approval before he embarked on a foreign tour last week.

The Commission had recommended Bachchan's disqualification on a petition by a Congressman Madanmohan Shukla that Jaya be disqualification because she held an office of profit as Chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council.

He said as per the Constitutional provisions Article 102 and 103, a petition was made to the President, who has referred it to the Commission for its opinion.
