Lucknow: Actress Jaya Bachchan is once again caught in controversy after having been disqualified once from the Rajya Sabha for holding an 'office of profit'.
She now faces a complaint for concealing her family's assets in the mandatory declaration made by her at the time of filing her nomination before her re-election to the upper house of Parliament.
Jaya is alleged to have skipped the mention of a huge chunk of land, owned by her husband actor Amitabh Bachchan, in Barabanki district, about 30 km from here.
In his complaint addressed to the Election Commission of India, Ameer Haider, a Barabanki based lawyer and a small-time Congress activist, pointed out that though Jaya filed her nomination a fortnight after the land was transferred in Amitabh's name, she did not mention the property.
The Election Commission promptly asked R P Pandey, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha poll returning officer, to look into the matter.
On Feb 6, Pandey sent a letter to Jaya Bachchan seeking her explanation on the issue.
"Her reply is awaited", Pandey said. He, however, declined to disclose any details.
The transfer of this land in Amitabh's name was also challenged earlier through a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the High Court here in October.
"In an obvious bid to avoid identification, Bachchan had mentioned his name as just 'Amitabh'. Even in his father's name he had cleverly dropped Bachchan," petitioner Satya Narain Shukla had then pointed out.
The petition is still pending before the court.
