Chennai: Two decades after he passed away, M G Ramachandran's 91st birth anniversary became a platform for present day state politics.
AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa on Thursday went all out to assert that she is the sole political heir to the MGR legacy.
“No one else can claim to be MGR's heir except his family and I. I am the leader of the party which MGR had created,” Jayalalithaa said.
It's a political reassertion aimed at actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth who has projected himself as Black MGR and has been consistently cutting into the AIADMK's votebank.
Jayalalithaa, who had paired with MGR in several films during 60s and 70s, showered praises on her mentor, saying it was MGR who introduced 'nutritious meal' scheme for schoolchildren, now being emulated by other states.
When MGR introduced the scheme, his political opponents ridiculed him. But now, the Supreme Court had issued a direction that the scheme should be implemented in all states, she said.
After her scathing attack on Vijayakanth, Jayalalithaa also had a message for the BJP. She clarified that her lunch meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi does not mean a political alliance.
“It's too premature to talk of an alliance now,” Jayalalithaa said.
As she keeps her political options open for the future her priority now is to reassert the past and guard her major political asset - MGR's legacy, which stays politically relevant even two decades after he passed away.
