Chennai: AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa's convoy was attacked near Madurai on Thursday and the former chief minister alleged that the attack was by DMK workers.

The workers allegedly pelted stones at Jayalalithaa's car while she was on her way from Madurai to Ramnad district in Tamil Nadu.

“The DMK wanted to stop me from going for a function and hence they attacked my convoy. It's the same people who were behind the Rajiv Gandhi assassination who are now after my life,” Jayalalithaa said.

The incident comes a day after she received a handwritten letter that warned if Jayalalithaa did not stop criticising the LTTE then she would be assassinated in the same manner as slain Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto. The letter was allegedly sent from Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the incident has also renewed Jayalalithaa's demand at the Madras High Court for a stronger security cover.

Counsel for Jayalalithaa, A Navneethakrishnan, said, “We have made a request to the court that it should ask for the deliberations of the security review committee to be placed before it for the court's perusal.”

Some of Jayalalithaa's demands are:

  • A bulletproof Scorpio instead of an Ambassador car that she presently gets.
  • A jammer vehicle.
  • A security cover consisting of 189 police personnel.

The state government however says it has given the former chief minister adequate security cover.

DGP, Tamil Nadu, KP Jain said, “We are aware of the threat to the former chief minister's life from the LTTE and she has been given enough security cover. We have taken a copy of the letter and we are investigating the matter.”

Clearly, it is not just Jayalalithaa's politics but her security, too, which is becoming a headache for her arch rival and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
