Chennai: The iron lady of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, finds herself out of power, with prospects of a rocky road ahead. But, then she's known to be a survivor.
In Chennai, jubilation was seen at the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) headquarters, however, less than a kilometer away at Poes Garden, there was a pall of gloom. And this is perhaps because in politics the winner take's it all.
Wednesday was not Amma's day. Her party is known for it's wild display of sycophancy but right now it's time for silence.
Jayalalithaa, who returned to her Poes Garden residence in Chennai on Thursday - after a brief sojourn at her farmhouse at Siruthavoor, on the city outskirts - sent the resignation letter hours after the election results were out.
"Whether it's a coalition government or a minority government the people of Tamil Nadu have lost," senior AIADMK leader, V Mythreyan said.
Karunanidhi's victory is the mark of the birth of a renewed war however, with changed power equations.
Jayalalithaa is known for being a political survivor especially after her comeback from her disastrous 1996 election results when the AIADMK regime was swept out of power in an anti-corruption wave. Jayalalithaa had lost the Bargur constituency to a first-time DMK candidate.
However, the question that now arises is how she will manage to tackle her bitter political rival.
