Jewish community shocked over Rabbi's death

Mumbai: The news of the death of Rabbi Holtzberg and his family who died at the Nariman House in Mumbai following a mindless terror attack by terrorists has sent shockwaves among the Jewish community as they watched in horror the hostage crisis.

An eerie silence looms over the five-storeyed Nariman building in the heart of South Mumbai's Colaba.

The death of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife and the miraculous escape of their 2-year-old son, Moshe has triggered reactions across the Jewish community.

Chabad Lubavitch representative Bruce Backman says, "It's a terrible tragedy. All of us here in New York and throughout the world, all our fellow Jews and people who are part of the Chabad Lubavitch movement are horrified at the result of this recent tragedy."

The nanny at the Chabad centre helped rescue the toddler who is now with the Israeli consulate.

However, even as the grim news came in, several members of the orthodox Jewish sect reached Mumbai to help care for Rabbi Holtsberg's son, Moshe who turned two on Sunday.

For the friends of the Rabbi, the concern now is to arrange for the couple's last rites and worry about Moshe's future.

The Holtsbergs had given shelter to the stranded hostages in a community kitchen and prayer hall, but their untimely death in the terror attack has left members of the Jewish community in Indian and across the world shocked and looking for answers.
