Bokaro: A eunuch in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, is toiling hard to bring up destitute and orphan kids. She takes care of them till they are married off. Mother to 13 kids so far, she doesn't believe in any grants or awards.

Some would say God hasn't been kind to her, but Raj Kumari has made a living out of being kind to everyone, specially orphaned and destitute kids. Kumari, a eunuch, makes a living by dancing door-to-door, but when she's not working she devotes all her time and money in bringing up orphaned children. Her three-bedroom house in Bokaro Steel City in Jharkhand, is now home to eight such children. "I pray for everyone's happiness. I earn enough money by entertaining people so as to feed the hungry," Raj Kumari says.

Raj Kumari adopts and cares for children from the streets, those abandoned at hospitals, and even the lost. Kumari says she first tries reuniting children with their parents, but when that's not possible, they just become a part of her family.

It's not the money, power or contacts, which makes you a great person, but heart as big as Raj Kumari's, which puts you away from the crowd. Within her modest means, Raj Kumari upbrings orphan kids like her own babies. They are very much part of her family, their needs are taken care till they are married off.

While Raj Kumari takes care of the children like any mother would, from feeding them, sending them to school and playing with them, she has not got funds unlike NGOs. She brings them up from her own earnings. "I have brought up these kids after they were abandoned. I haven't asked for anything from the government or anyone," she says.

It all began 20 years ago, when Raj Kumari was first brought home an abandoned baby girl from a hospital. That girl, all grown up now, is married to a motor mechanic. There are two other adopted children of hers who are married and settled as well.

"Raj Kumari is my mother. She is the one who is looking after all our needs," says her adopted daughter Nitu Devi. For 20 years, Raj Kumari has been rescuing and bringing up kids. She has mothered 13 children so far, all without winning awards or grants.
