New Delhi: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, have more than one thing in common. These Rock n Roll stars belong to the 27 Club - they all died at the age of 27, because of drug overdose.
And while the real cause of Michael Jackson's untimely death is still not confirmed, speculation and initial investigations point at his dependency on potent prescription drugs.
His ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley's blog entries talk about Michael's fear of ending up like her legendary father Elvis Presley who died in 1977 due to an overdose of prescribed drugs.
In fact, drugs and rock-n-roll stars share a history.
Seven years before Elvis, celebrated guitarist Jimi Hendrix reportedly died of an overdose of sleeping pills.
The coroner's report said that the death was caused due to “inhalation of vomit after barbiturate intoxication”.
The same year, singer songwriter Janis Joplin died after OD-ing on heroin.
A year later the frontman of the Doors, Jim Morrison also joined the '27 Club’.
He was found dead in his house in Paris in his bathtub. With autopsy not a norm in Paris his cause of death was never confirmed but few doubt that it had to do with drugs.
Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana whose addiction to drugs was the worst kept secret in the music fraternity, was found dead at his home in Seattle in 1994. The official reason given was a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. Autopsy reports confirmed significant levels of valium and heroine in his body.
Even today, the sad trend of accomplished musicians being lost to drugs continues.
British singer Amy Winehouse shot to fame in 2006 with five grammies.
But today, she's more in news for her numerous visits to rehab and odd behaviour than her music.
