New Delhi: India is gearing up to welcome the Olympics torch and a jittery government is getting its act together to ensure the day goes incident free. In fact, such is the caution that the relay route is likely to be cut short from 9 km.
The IOA has all along been demanding that the torch relay start from the Red Fort to India Gate but it the run might just be short to two km.
IOA President Suresh Kalmadi confirms this, “There could be some changes in the original schedule because of the situation that is prevailing.”
Security arrangements in the run up to April 17 will be on the scale of Republic Day with barricades to keep protestors at bay and access control to Rajpath.
In all probability, traffic on the India Gate roundabout is likely to be curtailed from the night of the April 16 itself. And Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee says India was “taking care” of the prime Chinese concern– security.
A final review will be done at the South Bloc on Thursday. The Chinese government had approached the Home Ministry on the logistics of the torch's security after the storming of their embassy by Tibetan protestors last month.
