Srinagar: Independence Day celebrations passed off peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, with Governor N.N. Vohra taking the salute at the main function at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.

Curfew had been lifted in several districts except Baramullah, Shopian and Pulwama.

However, reports said that people opted to stay indoors and shops remain closed in most part of the state.

The curfew had been clamped four days ago following violence sparked off by the Amarnath land transfer row.

Jammu and Kashmir had come under Governor's rule last month after Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad failed to secure a trust vote in the assembly

Meanwhile, CRPF Inspector General, Sunil Kumar Jain has been transferred following reports by excesses by security forces. Heavy security arrangements have been made in the state on Independence Day.

Addressing the the gathering, Vohra said, "We have to rise above considerations of religion and region to consolidate the gains of peace and progress we have achieved in the last 18 years."

"Governor's Rule is only temporary. My intention is that elections are held (on schedule) and the situation returns to normal," he said.

A contingent of students from the Police Public School provided the token civilian component at the parade.

Independence Day celebrations were also held at Ganderbal, Bandipora, Phulgam, Badgam, Kupwara, Anantnag officials said.
